Methods Need to Fit Real Life

Some language advice assumes you have unlimited free time and a brain wired like a linguistic savant. It makes for entertaining content, but it is not a method that most people can implement in their daily lives. The Language Laboratory builds strategies for real schedules, real energy levels, and real human brains.

Specific Goals Beat Vague Dreams

"I want to be fluent someday" is not a goal. "I want to reach B2 by next summer so I can navigate a conversation at a restaurant in Paris without feeling lost" is a goal. Specificity creates direction. Vague ambitions create guilt. The Language Laboratory helps clients set targets they can actually hit.

Annoying Things Work

It is the structural backbone of every Language Laboratory engagement.

Comprehensible input

Learners encounter new material at the edge of what they can already understand. Not so easy it's pointless, not so hard it's noise. Multimodal: video, text, visual, audio, lived example.

Scaffolded meaning-making

Learners work with the material — discussing, applying, restructuring, asking. The cognitive heavy-lifting happens here, in collaboration or against a designed prompt.

Independent production

Learners produce something on their own that demonstrates the new ability — and often surfaces the next thing they don't quite have yet, which feeds the next Perception cycle.

I teach U.S. History, World History, Government, and Economics daily to multilingual learners at a Title I high school with an International Center in Southwest Florida. My students come from across Latin America, Haiti, Brazil, and beyond. I deliver instruction in English, Spanish, and French every day, and I build all of my own scaffolded, trilingual classroom materials from scratch.

I started studying Latin and German young, and for years I dreamed of becoming a Germanist and academic linguist. Life pulled me through careers in business, healthcare, and eventually into teaching, but languages remained at the center of everything. At 33, I acquired Spanish through immersion with my wife's family, and today I use it daily alongside French, Portuguese, and English in my multilingual classroom.

That trajectory — from classical languages as a young student to adult Romance language acquisition in a cross-cultural family — gives me an unusually personal understanding of how languages are learned across a lifetime. It is not just theory. I have lived it. I have studied more grammars than I can count, and the process of learning itself is what genuinely fascinates me.

I am currently pursuing a Doctor of Education in Curriculum & Instruction at the University of Louisiana Monroe, researching translanguaging, AI-integrated pedagogy, and multilingual learner achievement. My original pedagogical framework, the Triple Input Cycle, is the foundation of both my doctoral research and my daily classroom practice.

That same research-and-design discipline drives the consulting side of The Language Laboratory.
